The band features musical director and guitarist Gary Schutt. Gary has some big shoes to fill, Randy, Jake, Brad, Tony, Zakk. What's Gary's qualifications for being able to mimic and do justice to some of the greatest iconic guitarists of all time? Besides spending countless hours in his bedroom as a teenager learning, practicing and copying every lick on the records (before YouTube)? Gary attended and graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1990, He was featured in the Guitar Player Magazine's "Spotlight" column in June of 1992 and the similar Guitar For The Practicing Musician's "Resume" column in June 1993. Starting in 1994 he ,and a slew of others, were featured in those magazine's "Notes On Call" ads where you can dial a 1-900 number and hear the person shred on your phone. Others notable shredders featured in that ad were Michael Romeo (Symphony X) and Jon Jinn (Jon Finn Group, Berklee professor).
How did the band come together? Gary Schutt and bassist Tracy Ferrell have been in a cover band together for many years and they were in a previous Ozzy tribute band called Bark At the Moon with a different singer. When that singer left, the guys thought they'll never find another Ozzy as good, so they let it go. A few year later, a bartender friend recommended an Ozzy impersonator that was doing the small bar scene in the Largo FL area as a karaoke act. Gary got a hold of Craig's (The Ozzman) demo DVD of him singing Ozzy songs Karaoke, dressed up in full costume and was asked to sit in with Gary's cover band and perform some Ozzy songs to see how it gelled. The band was ear to ear grins and the crowd loved it! Thus Diary Of An Ozzman was born! Why the name Diary of an Ozzman? Because the numerous Ozzy tribute bands already in existence had all the easy/song title names taken: ex. Crazy Train, Ozzmosis, Blizzard of Ozzy, and Diary of a Madman. And that's how Craig, um, The Ozzman, got his nickname.
